CommentTaxonomy: Gamble et al. 2011 found different lineages within P. pollicaris, which may be valid species. They also suggested that P. p. przewalskii is a valid (evolutionary) species; however, they refrained from formally elevating it as this action would make pollicaris paraphyletic, requiring the establishment of additional species which are currently not well diagnosed.

Distribution: For distributions maps of both subspecies see Vanzolini 1968: 100 (Map 7). For a recent map (with most subspecies elevated or synonymized) see Cacciali et al. 2018. Reports from countries outside Brazil represent species that have been removed from P. pollicaris, and include Paraguay (Paraguari [HR 27: 211]), Bolivia (goyazensis: Santa Cruz, Tarija; pollicaris: Santa Cruz, Tarija; fide DIRKSEN & DE LA RIVA 1999), Argentina (Misiones, Corrientes, Chaco, Santiago del Estero, Formosa [HR 27: 211], Jujuy)

Type species: Phyllopezus goyazensis PETERS 1878 is the type species of the genus Phyllopezus PETERS 1878.

Diet: a large percentage of the diet of this species (10-30%) consists of ants (Lucas et al. 2023).
EtymologyNamed after Latin pollicaris, of or belonging to a thumb; of the thickness of a thumb. (Esteban Lavilla, pers. comm., April 2024)

The genus was named after Greek phyllon (φύλλον), leaf + Greek pezos (πεζός), on foot, on land
