DistributionAustralia (New South Wales: Sydney Hawkesbury sandstone region)

Type locality: New South Wales.
Reproductionoviparous
TypesHolotype: BMNH xxii.98a (probable type; now a cleared and stained osteological preparation; see Covacevich, 1975)
DiagnosisDiagnosis: “A small leaf-tailed Phyllurus very similar to p caudiannulatus from which it may be distinguished readily by tail shape (depressed, broad, leaf-like original and regenerated tail vs conventional cylindrical original and regenerated tail*). Specimens without tails virtually indistinguishable although P. caudiannulatus is usually more spinose, especially on the head, than P. platurus and the two species occur in widely separated localities (mideastern N.S. W. vs mideastern Queensland). Distinguished from P. cornutus from southeastern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales, with which it has been confused, by size (SV 95-9 (max) vs 140•0), absence of calcareous deposits on throat (present on skin covering bones of lower jaw in P. cornutus) and, less reliably, tubercles at flank (very small vs larger, rounded or flattened and strongly hooked in northern specimens).” (COVACEVICH 1975)
CommentType species: Phyllurus novaehollandiae SCHINZ 1822 is the type species of the genus Phyllurus SCHINZ 1822. Phyllurus OKEN 1817 is a nomen nudum fide WERMUTH 1965: 148.

Caudal autotomy: Bauer & Russell surveyed autotomy in carphodactylid geckos, including Phyllurus.
EtymologyPresumably named after the Greek platys (broad or flat) plus oura (tail) referring to the tail shape. (G. Shea, pers. comm., 9 Feb 2024)
