CommentType species: Plectrurus trilineatus BEDDOME 1867 is the type species of the genus Platyplectrurus GÜNTHER 1868.
EtymologyNamed after Latin tri- (from trēs) = three + līneā = line + -tus, "provided with", meaning "marked with three lines", referring to the 3 prominent dark stripes on the side of the body of the species.

The genus name, Platyplectrurus, in new Latin comes from the combination of three Greek word forming words: platy- "broad, wide", plectre/plēctrum from Ancient Greek plêktron, from plḗssō, “to strike, sting”, and oura (meaning “tail”). It refers to members of a genus that have broad bodies with sharp tail tips to sting with.
