DiagnosisDIAGNOSIS. “This new species does not seem to be closely related to any of the known forms of Platysaurus, differing from all in the complete absence of light longitudinal stripes in both adults and juveniles of both sexes. It agrees with P. capensis in having the sides of the neck and the flanks covered with small subuniform granules no larger than those on the dorsum, also in the length of the adpressed hind limb, which reaches the neck, but it differs from this form in the presence of strongly keeled scales on the upper surface of the limbs. The transverse ventral count of 12-14 is lower than that in any other form except P. mitchelli (12), which is readily distinguished by the presence of a pair of supranasals and femoral pores developed in both sexes, and P. guttatus pungweensis (14-16) which has enlarged granules on sides of neck and flanks, spines on tibia towards heel and lateral caudals, etc., etc. The occipital is very variable in this form. In half the series the occipital is absent (as in P. capensis), in the others it varies in size, making contact with the interparietal in four specimens (as in P. g. rhodesianus, etc.). The series is very consistent in size, adult males measuring 86-91 mm. from snout to vent, females 75-82 mm.; thus comparable in size with P. g. guttatus.” (BROADLEY 1962: 811)
