“Die Erstellung der Diagnose ist stark erschwert durch den Umstand, daß P. wagleriana früher nicht nur, wie die meisten Podarcis-Arten, als „Varie­tät“ von Lacerta muralis lief, sondern darüber hinaus noch mit der „var. serpa“ (= P. sicula) vermengt wurde (vgl. Boulenger 1920*) und erst durch die Arbeiten Müllers (1922) und Mertens (1926) Artstatus er­ hielt. Während eine Abgrenzung gegenüber den habituell äußerst ähnli­chen Balkanarten P. taurica und melisellensis (s. oben) noch möglich ist, ge­staltet sich dies gegenüber den durch Mertens (1955) und Klemmer (1956, 1957) in verwandtschaftliche Beziehung gesetzten tyrrhenischen Arten P. tiliguerta und filfolensis viel schwieriger. Auch die Unterscheidung von P. sicula ist, wie die jahrzehntelange Verwechslung auch durch große Spezialisten zeigt, durchaus nicht immer eindeutig.” (Böhme 1986: 377)

Subspecies: Böhme 1986 recognized 3 subspecies and briefly described them. Podarcis wagleriana antoninoi is now considered as a subspecies of P. raffonei. The subspecies P. w. marettimensis is supported by having only private haplotypes (Senczuk et al., 2018). 
EtymologyApparently named after Johann Georg Wagler (1800-1832), German herpetologist. It’s unclear why Gistel used “wagleriana” but he also used similar forms for other species, such as Podarcis bonapartiana.
