DiagnosisDiagnosis: “Eine schlanke Eidechse von Mauereidechsengröße (GL schwankt stark, bis zu 220 mm), mit im unregenerierten Zustand fast dop­ pelt körperlangem Schwanz, mit glattrandiger Halsbandschuppenreihe und deutlichem Massetericum; Körperoberseite in der Regel mit netzartiger Zeichnung; Bauch einfarbig weißlich, gelb, orange oder rot; äußere Bauch­ randschilder bilden eine blaue Fleckenreihe.
Die in die Verwandtschaft der Mauereidechsen gehörende P. erhardii weist eine große Variabilität ihrer charakterisierenden Merkmale auf und ist daher im Vergleich mit den ihr nahestehenden Arten auch schwer zu bewerten (Bedriaga 1882*, 1886*; Schreiber 1912*; Müller 1933*; Cyren 1933*, 1941*; Werner 1938*; Wettstein 1953*). Dies hat dazu geführt, daß sie erst verhältnismäßig spät als eigenständige Art erkannt wurde (Bolkay, 1919*, 1920; Werner 1930). In der Körperform und den äuße­ren Abmessungen ähnelt sie den übrigen Mauereidechsen, wie beispiels­weise P. muralis, P. melisellensis oder P. taurica. In der Pholidose läßt sie sich allerdings vor allem von P. muralis vergleichend abheben ( Boulenger 1920*; Wettstein 1937). So besitzt P. erhardii glatte oder nur ganz schwach gekielte Körperschuppen gegenüber den deutlich gekielten der P. muralis. Die Kinnschuppenzahlen liegen bei P. erhardii mit 27-35 Reihen deutlich höher als bei P. muralis mit 21-27 Reihen. Während bei P. muralis das Occipitalschild gleich breit oder schmäler als das Interparietalschild bleibt, ist es bei P. erhardii gegenüber dem Interparietale verbreitert und verkürzt. Im Vergleich mit der robuster gebauten P. taurica hebt sich P. er­hardii pholidotisch vor allem durch ihr glattrandiges Halsband ab, das bei ersterer deutlich gezähnt ist. Im übrigen sind die erwähnten, verwandt­ schaftlich nahestehenden Mauereidechsen feldherpetologisch durch ihre unterschiedliche Färbung und Zeichnung leicht anzusprechen. Ausführli­ che Beschreibungen der Art Podarcis erhardii finden sich bei Bedriaga (1882*, 1886*, dort noch als „Lacerta muralis Subsp. fusca Var. Erhardii und Subsp. neapolitana“ bezeichnet), Cyren (1941*), Werner (1938*) und Wettstein (1953*), sowie feldherpetologisch bei Arnold und Bur­ton (1979*) und bei Matz und Weber (1983*).
Der Schädel wirkt breit und plump; Pterygoidzähne sind selten; Schläfenverknöcherungen fehlen. Der Längen-Höhen-Index (Condylobasal- länge X 100 : Schädelhöhe) und der Längen-Breiten-Index (Condylobasallänge X 100: Breite des Schädeldaches) des Schädels von P. erhardii stimmt im Durchschnitt mit den entsprechenden Indices von P. sicula überein, ist aber deutlich unterschieden von denjenigen der P. muralis (Klemmer 1957*, untersucht für P. erhardii riveti).” (Gruber 1986: 25) 
CommentSubspecies: Many of the subspecies that have been described for P. erhardii have been synonymized, e.g. with P. taurica or P. cretensis. Out of the 28 recognized subspecies, 27 are found in Greece from the North Sporades island-complex in the North Aegean (grossly south of the 39th parallel) to the island of Crete in the South. The species exhibits great morphological and ecological plasticity and inhabits many different habitats from rocky islets and sandy shores to mountaintops as high as 2000 m. SINDACO & JEREMCENKO 2008 consider most subspecies as doubtful and recognize only three of them: livadiacus, riveti, and thessalicus. Boulenger 1920 listed livadiaca under fiumana. Werner 1935 provides a detailed description of different forms across various islands.
