(Henle & Klaver 1986: 254)

CommentSubspecies: At least 60 subspecies have been described (Henle & Klaver 1986). Forty-seven of these subspecies are island endemics and most of them have been described on the basis of very small differences and / or using very small samples. It is doubtful that many of these subspecies are diagnosable as separate populations, given the variability of this species. Many subspecies are probably synonymous. Lanza 1954 points out that Lacerta sicula mülleri TADDEI 1948 is pre-occupied by Lacerta lilfordi mülleri EISENTRAUT 1928, and hence suggested the replacement name L. s. müllerlorenzi. Lacerta aetrusca TADDEI 1953 is a synonym of L. s. müllerlorenzi fide LANZA 1954. LANZA 1954 also mentions the subspecies liscabiancae MERTENS 1952: 309 and trischittai MERTENS 1952: 311, both of unknown status. L. acrolampra is probably a melanistic variety of P. siculus (Schreiber 1912, Henle & Klaver 1986). Henle & Klaver 1986: 288 list a number of subspecies described under L. muralis as subspecies of siculus, e.g. albiventris, elegans, parkeri. Mayer (2013 suspects that many if not most subspecies are synonyms of the nominate siculus. SENCZUK et al. 2019 elevated Podarcis siculus latastei to species status, along with several subspecies.

Synonymy: partly after TIEDEMANN et al. 1994. P. s. scorteccii is considered a synonym tyrrhenica by Mertens (1949), Lanza & Borri (1969) and Hotz (1973).

Hybridization: Capula (2002) provides genetic evidence of natural hybridization between Podarcis sicula and Podarcis tiliguerta.

Melanistic variants are known from Croatia and other places.

Conservation: Podarcis sicula hadzii Brelih 1961 is now extinct (Tome 1997). P. s. sanctistephani is believed to have become extinct during the first decades of the last century (1914 at the latest), and replaced by P. s. siculus (Mertens, 1965).
EtymologyNamed after the location where the species was original reported from, “Sicily”.

P. s.premudensis and premudanus are both named after Premuda island.
