Original description: “L. cauda longissima verticillata, dorso fasciato maculato medio viridi, ventre loricato fulvo.

Descr. Persimilis L. europaeae, sed gracilior, cauda longiore. Caput simile, sed argutius, livido - gryseum, subtus album, lateribus fusco - maculatum. Collare insigne e squamis octo vel 7. Venter quadruplici ordine squamarum loricatus, medio longitudinaliter fulvus, utrinque punctis nigris stipatus. Femora subtus suturae punctis callosis circiter 13. insigni carinata. Artus concolores corpori. Cauda subtus fulvescens, dupla longitudine corporis, squamis annularibus, serrulatis verticillata. Palmae plantaeque pentadactylae, digits annulatis, acutissime unguiculatis, ut in verticali politissima
rum rupium facie facile discurrat. Polices breviores, discolores, fulvescentes. In junioribus macula obsoletiores, strigae dilutae magis conspicuae, fulvedo subtus debilis vel nulla. Adultae longitudo tota 6". 8". capitis 7’’’. colli 4". caudae 4". 2.5’’’. (Pallas 1814: 30)

90 mm). Rückenschuppen gekielt. Schädel sehr kräftig, kurz und hoch gebaut. Schläfenfenster relativ groß, Lamina superciliaris vollständig verknöchert. Pterygoidzähne immer vorhanden.” (Kabisch 1986: 343)

CommentSubspecies: Podarcis taurica gaigeae has been elevated to species status. Psonis et al. 2016 found that species delimitation approaches clearly support the existence of nine distinct species within the P. tauricus species subgroup. However, they did not describe these 9 species in any detail.

Synonymy: Psonis et al. 2016 suggested to synonymize P. t. tauricus and P. t. thasopulae. They also found a “P. ionicus” species complex without explicitly delineating species though.

Priority: Schmidtler 2022 shows that Georgi 1801 is the author of P. tauricus, not Pallas 1814 who redescribed it, apparently believing that Georgi’s name was a nomen nudum (which it isn’t as he provided a short description). For the publication date of Pallas 1814 (vs. 1831) see ICZN Opinion 212.
