DistributionAustralia (Queensland)

Type locality: 1.0km E Frenchville Rd via Pilbeam Drive, Mt Archer, (Rd to summit), Qld

TypesHolotype: QM J42616 (previously AMS (AM) R96212), collected by A. Greer & P. Greer, 21.viii.1976.
DiagnosisDiagnosis: Differs from all other species of Anomalopus in the following combination of characters: limbs totally lacking, nasals in broad contact, and paravertebral scales 84-102. It is also unique among Anomalopus in having the first sternal rib arising from the eighth presacral vertebra instead of the ninth, and unique in Vermiseps in having the frontal and maxilla bones in contact (thereby separating the prefrontal and nasal) (GREER & COGGER 1985: 29).
CommentPhylogenetics: Singhal et al. 2018 found considerable paraphyly among A. gowi, brevicollis, and other members of Anomalopus. However, they did not propose any taxonomic implications.

Limb morphology: 0 digits 0 toes (Limbless, Singhal et al. 2018, Cogger 2014)
EtymologyThe name brevicollis derives from the Latin for 'short neck' and calls attention to reduced number of cervical vertebrae (8 instead of 9).
