EtymologyNamed after Sir WaIter Baldwin Spencer (1860-1929), an explorer, biologist, anthropologist, zoologist, and patron of the arts. He went to Australia to become the first Professor of Biology, University of Melbourne (1887-1919), and Director of the Natural History Museum, Melbourne.

The genus Pseudemoia was apparently named after the Greek pseudes (false) plus the base genus Emoia. The type species was originally assigned to the subgenus Emoa, a synonym of Emoia. Derivation not stated by Fuhn (1967).
