Type locality: 8 km (5 mi.) S San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, México.

TypesHolotype: UTEP 12233. Paratypes: MZFC 4194 (JDJ 1736), male collected with the holotype specimen; CAS 163535 (JFC 66-60), a female from Rancho Nuevo, Mexico Hwy 190, 13.8 km SE San Cristóbal de Las Casas, 2377 m, obtained by D. E. Breedlove on 28 July 1966; CAS 163665, a female from near Piedracitas, on road to Zontehiutz, obtained by D. E. Breedlove on 30 November 1971; CAS 163927, a male from San Cristóbal de Las Casas, above and of Rancho Nuevo, 2713 m, obtained by D. E. Breedlove and P. M. Breedlove on 28 July 1980.

CommentEsta especie reemplaza a lo que se conocía como R. hempsteadae de Chiapas, México [FLORES-VILLELA & CANSECO-MÁRQUEZ 2004]. 
Etymology“The specific ephitet, kanalchutchan, is an indeclinable word and is a phonetic approximation (guttural stops and pops ignored; accent on last syllable) of one of three names used by the Tzetzal indians for this species. Translations yields “yellow bellied snake” (kanal meaning yellow, chut meaning belly and chan meaning snake.
