DistributionMexico (Puebla, CW Michoacan, Jalisco, Distrito Federal, México, Morelos, N Guanajuato, Quéretaro, Guerrero, Veracruz), elevation 2000-3000 m

Type locality: Mexico (by inference). Restricted to Tres Cumbres by SMITH & TAYLOR 1950.  
Reproduction“almost viviparous” by laying eggs that contain well-developed “embryos” which hatch after 12-14 days. Blackburn 1994 and others called this species “oviparous”.<br />subniger: viviparous, aeneus: oviparous (Ramirez-Bautista et al. 2017).

CommentSubspecies: S. aeneus subniger is variably considered as full species or as subspecies of S. aeneus. 
EtymologyNamed after its color: Latin “aenea/-us” = bronze, copper, or ore.
