DiagnosisAdditional details, e.g. a detailed description or comparisons (117 characters), are available for collaborators and contributors. Please contact us for details.
CommentSubspecies: Sceloporus jarrovii minor COPE 1885 has been transferred to S. torquatus (but is listed in LINER 1994 as such). WIENS et al. (1999) consider minor and several other subspecies of jarrovii as “evolutionary species”. Sceloporus jarrovii lineolateralis SMITH 1936 has been removed (again) from the synonymy of S. jarrovi. Sceloporus jarrovii oberon SMITH & BROWN 1941 has been moved to Sceloporus minor oberon SMITH & BROWN 1941. Sceloporus jarrovii cyaneus TREVIÑO-SALDAÑA 1988 and Sceloporus jarrovii immucronatus SMITH 1936 are now treated as subspecies of S. minor. Sceloporus jarrovii erythrocyaneus MERTENS 1950 has been transferred to S. minor erythrocyaneus. S. j. jarrovii lacks fixed diagnostic morphological characters (Wiens and Penkrot 2002). The characters early identified by Smith (1939) like diagnostic of S. j. jarrovii (e. g., the first canthal seldom forced above canthal ridge by contact of second canthal and subnasal, prefrontals in contact, color pattern etc.), exhibit some intraespecific variation even in other populations. Some authors have similarly reported that S. lineolateralis and S. j. jarrovii intergrade with each other based on morphological characters (Webb and Hensley 1959; Chrapliwy 1964; Wiens et al. 1999). The previous studies along with the molecular results by MARTINEZ-MENDEZ & MENDEZ-DE LA CRUZ 2007 indicate the conspecificity between S. lineolateralis and S. j. jarrovii. Sceloporus jarrovii sugillatus SMITH 1942 and Sceloporus jarrovii cyanostictus AXTELL & AXTELL 1971 are now considered as valid species.

Synonymy: MARTINEZ-MENDEZ & MENDEZ-DE LA CRUZ 2007 suggested to synonymize S. lineolateralis with S. jarrovii or consider it as a subspecies of the latter.

Distribution: S. jarrovi does not occur in Querétaro (Mexico) according to DIXON & LEMOS-ESPINAL 2010. Distribution not corrected for removal of subspecies. Not listed for San Luis Potosí by Lemos-Espinal & Dixon 2013. Not in Morelos fide Lemos-Espinal 2020.

Group: S. torquatus group (sensu lato, fide Flores-Villela et al. 2022)
EtymologyNamed after Henry Crecy Yarrow, Acting Assistant Surgeon, United States Army, and volunteer curator of amphibians and reptiles in the National Museum of Natural History.

lineolateralis: The Latin lineo,"to make straight," and lateralis, "of the side," refer to the light and especially dark lines along the side of the body.
