CommentSubspecies: Sceloporus heterolepis shannonorum LANGEBARTEL 1959 is now considered as a valid species. 
EtymologyThe Greek words heteros, "different," and lepido-, "scale," refer to the noticeably unequal sizes of the dorsal scales.
