apicalis: Mexico (Oaxaca). Type Locality: Ten miles S Miahuatlán, Oaxaca, Mexico.

caeruleopunctatus: highlands of Oaxaca. Type Locality: Slopes of Cerro de San Luis, about 15 mi N Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico.

Type locality: Mexico. Restricted to Puebla, Puebla, by SMITH & TAYLOR 1950.

CommentWiens and Reeder (1997) suggested that S. s. caeruleopunctatus may be of species rank. 
EtymologyThe Latin spinosus, "thorny", refers to the strongly spiny scales.

apicalis: S. s. apicalis was named after the Latin apiculus, "little tip", was applied in reference to the occurrence of the subspecies at the southern apex of the state of Oaxaca.
