DistributionUSA (Texas except eastern fourth, SW Oklahoma, W/S New Mexico, SE Arizona: in vicinity of San Pedro River), Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska)
Mexico (Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Chihuahua [HR 35: 82]).

Type locality: Beckham County, Oklahoma, near the confluence of the north fork of the Red River and Suydam Creek (after SMITH & TAYLOR 1950).

Type Locality: Vicinity of North Fork of the Red River, and Elm Fork, R20N, T4N, S34, Southern Oklahoma Adolescent Alcoholics Rehabilitation Ranch, Quartz Mountain State Park, Kiowa County, Oklahoma (fide BELL et al. 2003).
TypesNeotype. OSUS R5284 (Oklahoma State University), designated by Bell and Smith (2000), replacing the holotype, USNM 2855, destroyed.
CommentBased on the evidence presented by LEACHÉ (2009), Sceloporus undulatus is apparently restricted to east of the Mississippi River and S. consobrinus to the west, a geographic finding consistent with a number of other systematic studies involving frogs and snakes.
EtymologyThe Latin adjective consobrinus, "cousin," was presumably applied in recognition of its close relationship to Sceloporus undulatus, which at that time (1853) had no subspecies.
