Type locality: Guengola Mountain, 6 km northwest if the city of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca.

EtymologyThis species honors Hobart M. Smith (1912-2013), a long-time student of Sceloporus, who pointed out the distinctness of this taxon to its describers.
