CommentGroup: S. formosus group (sensu lato, fide PÉREZ-RAMOS & SALDAÑA DE LA RIVA 2008) 
EtymologyThe Latin genitive singular name honors Wilmer W. Tanner (1909-2011), of Brigham Young University, who has contributed much to western United States and Mexican herpetology. Obituary in Sites 2012. See also Tanner 1993 for an autobiography.
