Type locality: Ningpo (= Ningbo), Zhejiang Province, China.

DiagnosisDiagnosis: A moderately sized Scincella. Body slightly elongated. No projecting lobules. Small number of subdigital lamellae under the fourth toe. Lateral dark band distinct, usually not bordered by a lighter dorsolateral stripe and not broken up by lighter spots (Ouboter 1986: 52). 
CommentSee discussion about synonyms in Ouboter (1986) who doesn’t distinguish between subspecies. Scincella vandenburghi (SCHMIDT 1927) and S. boettgeri have been removed from synonymy of S. modesta. S. potanini and S. schmidti have been considered as synonyms of S. modesta but are listed as valid species here.
