Diagnosis | Diagnosis (genus): “A group of small (less than 0.6 m total length), glossy scaled semi-fossorial snakes with anal divided, short tails with 35 or fewer paired subcaudals and showing variation in snout shape and body proportions analogous to those seen in Ramphotyphlops. Rostral always projecting but varying in profile from bulbous (e.g. bimaculatus) to wedge-shaped (e.g. fasciolatus) to upturned and angular (e.g. semifasciatus). No canthus rostralis. Body short and dumpy to elongate, but ventral fewer than 230. Dark parietal and nuchal blotches always present, body usually yellow, orange or reddish, generally with darker reticulated or cross-banded pattern.” (Hutchinson 1990: 403) Additional details (1138 characters) are available for collaborators and contributors.
