Etymology | Named after Edward Drinker Cope (1840-1897), American herpetologist. See Osborn 1929 and Vetter 2003 for biographical notes. Sphaerodactylus copei astreptus was named from the Greek α- (= without) and στρεπτός (= twisted, but defined by Schwartz 1975 as "collar"), a reference to the lack of a dark collar. Sphaerodactylus copei cataplexis was named from the Latin (= object of admiration), possibly a reference to the bright colors of some males Sphaerodactylus copei deuterus SCHWARTZ 1975 no from the Greek δευτερεύς (= second), a reference to this being the second Sphaerodactylus found on Île de la Gonâve. Sphaerodactylus copei enochrus was probably named after Greek en- for “in” and Greek ochros = pale-yellow, for the pale does, nuchal bands, and nuchal line on a pale ground. Sphaerodactylus copei pelates was named from the Greek πελάτες (= customer, defined by Schwartz as "neighbor," or someone who comes near), a reference to females from near Aquin being similar to those from near Cavaillon, Haiti. Sphaerodactylus copei picturatus was named from the Greek εικόνα (= picture) and the Latin suffix -atus (=provided with), possibly a reference to the distinct markings on the head and dorsum in this subspecies. Sphaerodactylus copei polyommatus was named from the Greek πολυ- (= very), όμμα (= eye), and the Latin suffix -atus (=provided with), presumably a reference to the many bright yellow spots in the dorsal pattern. Sphaerodactylus copei websteri was named patronym honoring T. Preston Webster, collector of the type series. |
