EtymologyPresumably named after Latin cortex = bark, and -cola, dweller of, after its habitat on tree barks (although Garman 1888 does not explain the etymology).

Sphaerodactylus corticola aporrox was named from the Greek ἀπνξξώμ (= broken off), a reference to the distribution of this subspecies being separated from the main range of the species.

Sphaerodactylus corticola campter was named from the Greek καμπτήρ (= bent or angle), a reference to the Crooked Island Bank in the Bahamas, which includes Acklin's Island, the type locality.

Sphaerodactylus corticola soter was named from the Greek Σωτήρ (= savior), a reference to San Salvador, the type locality.
