Type locality: near Bogia, Madang Province, Papua New Guinea fide Kaiser et al. 2018.

TypesHolotype: NMW 14861, an adult male. Collected by Rudolf Pöch between 28 July and 25 November 1904 
Diagnosis 
CommentSynonymy: Stegonotus dorsalis is listed as synonym of S. diehli by Wallach et al. 2014. Kaiser et al. 2018 resurrected Stegonotus dorsalis as valid species.

Stegonotus dorsalis is only known from the holotype. 
EtymologyNamed in honor of the German protestant missionary Wilhelm Diehl (1874-1940), who sent the specimens from New Guinea to Wiesbaden.
