|Higher Taxa||Colubridae, Colubrinae, Colubroidea, Caenophidia, Alethinophidia, Serpentes, Squamata (snakes)|
|Synonym||Stegonotus reticulatus BOULENGER 1895: 31|
Stegonotus reticulatus — KAISER et al. 2018: 43
|Distribution||Papua New Guinea (southern slopes of the mountainous spine of the country)|
Type locality. “Fergusson Island, D’Entrecasteaux Group, British New Guinea” [Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea; ca. 9.54°S, 150.67°E].
|Types||Lectotype: BMNH 19220.127.116.11 (formerly 18.104.22.168), adult male, designated by Wells & Wellington (1985). A subsequent designation of BMNH 1922.214.171.124 (formerly 126.96.36.199), an adult female, as lectotype by Kaiser et al. (2018) is invalid due to the priority of the earlier lectotype designation.|
|Diagnosis||Kaiser et al. 2018 “expect members of this species to generally possess values of D = 17-17-15, SLE = 4+5, SL = 8, IL = 9, and ILG = 5, with relatively high ventral and subcaudal scale counts (V > 200, SC > 90). However, we caution our readers that values outside of these parameters may, but probably rarely, occur in conspecifics. The male value of SCR = 0.30 in the holotype is relatively high for the genus.”|
Comparison: For a comprehensive comparison of species, especially to the new species Stegonotus ayamaru, see that entry and Kaiser et al. 2019.
|Comment||Synonymy: Listed as a synonym of S. cucullatus by Wallach et al. 2014, but Kaiser et al. 2018 removed Lycodon reticulatus from the synonymy of S. cucullatus.|
