DiagnosisDiagnosis: TORRES-CARVAJAL 2007. 
CommentHas been synonymized previously with Stenocercus crassicaudatus but resurrected by TORRES-CARVAJAL et al. 2005.

Belongs to the clades Scelotrema and Microphractus (fide TORRES-CARVAJAL 2006).

mainly arboreal.

Sympatric with S. boetteri, S. formosus, and S. scapularis (in Pasco). S. variabilis occurs allopatrically at higher elevations (>2500 m) in Junin. 
EtymologyNamed after the Latin torquatus, "adorned with a necklace or collar", refers to the conspicuous, light-bordered black collar in these lizards.
