DistributionEcuador (Cotopaxi, Pichincha, elevation 1460-2200 m.; Chiriboga, 5000 ft. on western slopes)

Type locality: unknown (fide PETERS & DONOSO-BARROS 1970). Restricted to Tandapi, 1460 m., Provincia Pichincha, Ecuador, by FRITTS 1974.

DiagnosisDiagnosis: TORRES-CARVAJAL 2007. 
CommentBelongs to the clades Scelotrema and Microphractus (fide TORRES-CARVAJAL 2006). 
EtymologyNamed after Latin varius, colored; party colored, variegated. [“...Upper surfaces dark bluish-grey, marbled with black ; tail with black cross bars ; lower surfaces bluish-grey ; belly a little lighter...”]. (from Esteban Lavilla, pers. comm., May 2024)
