DiagnosisDiagnosis: Storeria occipitomaculata is diagnosable by the absence of a loreal, and the presence of six supralabials, two preoculars, two postoculars, and dorsal scales in 15 rows at midbody (PYRON et al. 2016).

CommentKaryotype: 36 chromosomes (34 macrochromosomes, 2 microchromosomes), females are ZW, males are ZZ (Hardy 1971, Ernst 2002). 
EtymologyNamed after Latin occiput ("back part of the head") + macula ("spot, mark"), a reference to the marking on the species head.

S. o. obscura is from Latin obscūrus (feminine: obscūra), meaning "obscure", a reference to less common occurence of the species.
