CommentType species: Tropidonotus dekayi HOLBROOK 1842 is the type species of the genus Storeria BAIRD & GIRARD 1853.

Subspecies: Storeria (dekayi) victa is now considered as a valid species, even though some authors (e.g. WALLACH et al. 2014: 676) list victa as synonym of dekayi. Pyron et al. (2016) synonymized all other subspecies with dekayi, given their poor diagnosibility and genetic differentiation. See Christman 1982 for a map and diagnostic characters of all (previous) subspecies.

Nomenclature: Smith and Huheey (1961:347) petitioned the ICZN to use its plenary powers to preserve the generic names Regina Baird and Girard, 1853 and Storeria Baird and Girard, 1853, particularly since Storeria had been used for over 100 years as the name for the genus of the North American Brownsnakes. Responding to the petition, the ICZN (1962: 145) placed the two genera on the Official List of Generic Names in Zoology.

Diet: earthworms and other invertebrates

Distribution: see Christman 1982 for a map of all subspecies
EtymologyThe species is named after James Ellsworth DeKay (1792-1851).

The genus name Storeria is a patronym honoring David Humphreys Storer (1804-1891), Massachusetts physician and naturalist and author of classic works on the fishes and reptiles of Massachusetts, resulting from his appointment in 1837 as a commissioner of the natural history survey of that state (Scudder 1892).
