Type locality: Department of Peten, Guatemala, restricted to Flores, Depto. El Petén, Guatemala, by Smith and Taylor (1950).

EtymologyThe name moesta derives from the Latin moestus, meaning “sad” or “sorrowful,” “perhaps an allusion to this snake’s somber coloration” (Lee, 1996).
