DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus). “Smooth dorsals in 17/17/15 rows; pupil circular; oral mucosa black; modified maxillary bone, reduced in size and in number of teeth, with a deeply enlarged sulcated last tooth and a unique anterior maxillary diastema; dentary teeth 6−12; loreal scale absent; supralabials 7; eye height equivalent to eye length; ventral portion of body with sparse pigmentation, not forming longitudinal lines or stripes.” (Trevine et al. 2022, Appendix 3) 
CommentSynonymy partly that of PETERS & OREJAS-MIRANDA 1970.

Type species: Tomodon dorsatum DUMÉRIL, BIBRON & DUMÉRIL 1854 is the type species of the genus Tomodon DUMÉRIL 1853: 495 and DUMÉRIL, BIBRON & DUMÉRIL 1854: 932.

EtymologyThe genus was named after the Greek “tomos” = to cut, and “odon” or “odous” = tooth), hence the gender is masculine (fide Trevine et al. 2022).
