Type locality: Madagascar (St. Augustins-Bay)

TypesLectotype: ZMB 6122, designated by BRYGOO 1985. 
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): The two Malagasy species of Tracheloptychus possess keeled dorsal scales (in contrast to Zonosaurus which have smooth scales), and keeled scales underneath digits (rounded in Zonosaurus) (Recknagel et al. 2013). 
CommentType species: Tracheloptychus madagascariensis PETERS 1854: 617 is the type species of the genus Tracheloptychus PETERS 1854.

Phylogenetics: While Tracheloptychus is monophyletic in recent studies (Recknagel et al. 2013) the genus may also be included as a synonym in Zonosaurus. 
EtymologyNamed after the type locality.
