CommentSubspecies: Trachemys venusta grayi (BOCOURT 1868) is now considered as a valid species. T. c. callirostris and T. c. chichiriviche (Seidel 2002) can be differentiated using molecular data (Jackson et al. 2008). The TTWG 2017: 63 checklist is undecided about the status of callirostris and lists it both as species and subspecies of venusta.

Synonymy: MCCRANIE et al. 2013 suggested to synonymize Trachemys venusta uhrigi MCCORD et al. 2010 “has no taxonomic validity”, given the substantial variation within T. venusta. SMITH & TAYLOR 1950: 31 listed this species as a synonym of Pseudemys scripta ornata.

Habitat: freshwater (lakes, ponds, rivers)
EtymologyThe specific epithet is derived from the Latin adjective venustus, meaning "like venus, charming, beautiful, elegant, or graceful.”
