Type locality: “Duque de Bragança, dans l’intérieur d’Angola” [= Calandula, Malanje Province], Angola.

keniensis: Kenya, Tanzania. Type locality: Northern Uaso Nyiro, Sotik, Kenya.

TypesSyntypes: BMNH 1946.8.19.13, ZMB 6477 (see Bauer et al., 2003). Other syntypes in MBL presumably lost in the fire that destroyed that collection in 1978.
Holotype: MD 1886 (Museu Dundo, Angola) [huilensis]
Holotype: MCZ R-29662 [keniensis] 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: Ceriaco et al. 2024 
CommentSynonymy: Trachylepis bayonii huilensis (LAURENT 1964) was described from a single juvenile specimen and apparently never investigated later. Marques et al. 2018 preliminarily list it as synonym of T. bayonii but state that it may warrant recognition.

The year of description is sometimes given as “1867”.

EtymologyNamed after Francisco Antonio Pinheiro Bayão, a Portuguese planter and administrator whose family had settled in Angola in the 17th century where he also collected many specimens.
