Type locality: unknown
Reproductionovoviviparous
TypesHolotype: MNHN-RA 2847. Smith (1923) mentioned 3 type specimens: MNHN-RA 2845-2847. However, the original description was obviously based on a single specimen (Duméril & Bibron 1839). The holotype is MNHN-RA 2847 because it has a TL (179 mm) which is identical with the original description

CommentNot listed by CHAN-ARD et al. 1999.

Type Species: Tropidophorus cocincinensis is the type species of the genus Tropidophorus Duméril & Bibron, 1839.

Key: Guo et al. 2021 provide a key to the species of Tropidophorus from China.

Reference images: see Uetz et al. 2024 for high-resolution reference images for this species.
EtymologyPresumably from the type locality, Cochinchina, a historical exonym for the southern part of Vietnam.

The genus name was not explained by Bocage (1873), but almost certainly from the Greek tropis (keel) plus Greek phora = carrying, in allusion to the keeled scales of the species in this genus.
