Definition (genus). Pupils with crenulated margins; scansorial pads of digits II–V not continuous along length of entire digit, a short series of fragmented scales separate lamellae from claw base; toes nar- row, with straight lamellae; apical plates present at the base of claws of all digits of the pes; ventral skin opaque; dorsal body pat- tern with complex chevron pattern; mouth lining and tongue pig- mented; precloacal pores of males continuous with femoral pores on under surface of thighs; SVL to 71 mm [NIELSEN et al. 2011].
EtymologyEtymology (genus): A Maori word for ornamental lattice-work, often intricate and beautiful, referring to the sole species’ unique dorsal coloration pattern. Maori nouns typically have no gender, but we treat Tukutuku as masculine for the purposes of nomenclatural construction. The specific name is derived from “Rakiura”, the Maori name for Stewart Island.
