Diagnosis | Diagnosis: Vermicella vermiformis can be differentiated from V. intermedia and V. multifasciata by the condition of the internasal scales (present in V. vermiformis) and the lower number of body and tail bands. V. vermiformis can be differentiated from V. annulata by its higher number of ventral scales and thinner body, and from V. snelli by its wider body and (usually) lower number of ventral scales. See Figs 4-6 for interspecific comparisons in these characters (Keogh & Smith 1996). |
Comment | Venomous! |
Etymology | The specific name, like the generic name, is a derivative of the Latin 'vermis' for worm and is in reference to the long thin body and fossorial nature of the species. |
