Reproduction
TypesHolotype. Adult male ZMMU R-14998 (field No. RAN 2098) collected on May 5, 2010, by Roman Nazarov, Dmitry Bondarenko and Mahdi Rajabizadeh.
Paratypes. Adult male ZMMU R-14999 (field No. RAN 2097) and three adult females ZMMU R-15988 (RAN 2099) to be deposited in MMTT, and ZMMU R-15989 (RAN 2100), R-15990 (RAN 2101) — all paratypes have the same collection data as the holotype.
DiagnosisDiagnosis: A medium-sized species of Cyrtopodion characterized by the following: SVLmax 48.1 mm, TailL 69 mm, females slightly larger than males, maximal SVL 49.2 mm; snout short and rounded (HeadLGSnEye 3.0); eyes large (HeadLGOrbD 3.8); 8 – 10 rows of smooth rounded dorsal tubercles across the middorsum, with 26 – 29 tubercles in paravertebral row; enlarged tubercles distributed on the neck and sides of the head, as well on the dorsal surface of the limbs except the shoulders; tail weakly segmented, with semi-rings of enlarged keeled elongate tubercles bordering each segment; subcaudal plates in a single median row, bifurcated on the distal third of a non-regenerated tail; 25 – 30 ventral scales across the mid-bally; 118 – 126 midventral scales from mental to cloaca. Males have 4 – 6 well developed precloacal pores located on slightly enlarged scales; no enlarged femoral scales or femoral pores; a large triangular mental plate; three pairs of postmentals, the first pair in broad contact. Limbs and tail thin and elongated. The tip of the tail is white and patternless. (Nazarov et al. 2026)

Unfortunately we had to temporarily remove additional information as this was scraped by multiple AI companies who sell that data. However, these details, e.g. detailed descriptions (about less than half a page) are available for collaborators and contributors. Please contact us if you need any of this material.
CommentStatus: this species should be considered as preliminary, given that the authors only used a COI fragment for sequencing and did not compare it to all Iranian species (which are also not all shown on the map).
EtymologyNamed after Greek kryptós, Latinized as “cryptus,” meaning “hidden,” and is given in reference to its morphological similarity to Cyrtopodion maritimum.
