| Diagnosis | Diagnosis: Goniurosaurus araneus differs from all other species of Goniurosaurus in having elongate dorsal body scales as opposed to granular body scales; and having four very wide, immaculate body bands between the nuchal loop and the caudal constriction. It differs further from G. kuroiwae and G. lichtenfelderi in having deep axillary pockets; lacking expanded and ridged occlusal tooth margins; having a greater adult SVL (115-124 mm vs. 63-97 mm), having thin, greatly elongate anterolateral and anteromedial processes of the pterygoid bone; having a posteriorly protracted nuchal loop which sits low on the nape of the neck as opposed to being rounded posteriorly and on the occiput; wide dark borders surrounding the body bands as opposed to narrow borders; and having a gracile, splayed body and limb stature as opposed to being more compact and robust. It differs further from G. kuroine in that the scales of the upper eyelids are one-half as opposed to equal in size to those on the top of the head; body tubercles do not increase in size posteriorly; claws are sheathed by four scales as opposed to being unsheathed and surrounded by 6-8 scales; having wide as opposed to narrow subdigital lamellae; having preanal pores; and the ultimate phalanges of the pes and manus are elongate and curved downward as opposed to short and straight. It differs further from G. lichtenfelderi in that it has four as opposed to three bands between the nuchal loop and the caudal constriction. It differs further from G. luii in not having a greatly enlarged row of supraorbital tubercles; higher number of preanal pores (23-29 vs. 18-22); much wider body bands and nuchal loop; nearly immaculate dorsal surfaces lacking mottling; limbs nearly immaculate, having only a few widely spaced dark blotches; dark mottling absent on lateral portions of belly; and juveniles with white as opposed to bright-orange body.bands.
