TypesType: BMNH 1946.1.1.67 (and possibly additional specimens). 
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus). The snakes in this subgenus are diagnosed by 16–19 dorsal scale rows at midbody; ,110 subcaudals; long, maximum SVL between 899 mm and 1400 mm, stocky bodies; and tail ,40% total body length. (Chaney et al. 2024)

Type species: Coluber smythii LEACH 1818: 409 is the type species of the genus Grayia GÜNTHER 1858: 50. Grayia is also the type genus of the subfamily Grayiinae Dowling 1967 (sometimes given as Grayiinae Meirte 1992).

EtymologyNamed after Norwegian botanist Christen Smith (1785-1816); hence the name “smythii” is inappropriate (but see Laurent 1956 and Meirte 1992).

The genus name “Grayia” is dedicated to British zoologist John Edward Gray (1800 – 1875).
