| Diagnosis | Diagnosis: A melanistic form of snout-vent length less than 80 mm. It lacks occipitals, has tail whorls consisting of double scale rows, has four supraciliaries per side and the scaling on the back consists of regular size scales as well as granular scales. It differs from C. coeruleopunctatus in that it has eight longitudinal rows of ventrals and not 10, four supraciliaries per side and not three, and in that the scaling on the back and sides consists of large rounded scales embedded in a granular matrix and not regular size scales only (fig. 2a, b). It further differs from C. coeruleopunctatus in that it lacks the fluorescent blue spots and yellow or orange coloured throat of the latter. It differs from P. capensis in its much smaller body size, in that the sides do not have granular scaling only, in that the two median rows of enlarged dorsal body scales are not separated by granular scales (fig. 2a, c), and in the lower number of femoral pores and upper labials. | Comment | Nomenclature: This name is preoccupied in Cordylus by C. nebulosus A. Smith 1838, a synonym of C. cataphractus, but as the latter appears to be the sister species of all other Cordylus (Frost et. al. 2001), it required to be placed in a new monotypic genus, so that a new name will not be required (Mouton, pers. comm., STANLEY et al. 2011). Ovoviviparous. Abundance: only known from the type locality (Meiri et al. 2017). |
| Etymology | The designated name, Pseudocordylus nebulosus, from Latin nebulosus, full of vapor, foggy, cloudy, dark, literally means the cloudy or dark crag lizard, refers to its occurrence within the mist belt of the Hottentots-Holland Mountains, as well as its melanistic body colour. |
