Type locality: unknown, but “Atacama Desert, Chile” fide Quijada (1916) but unknown fide Troncoso-Palacios 2026.

TypesLectotype: MNHNCL 1646; paralectotypes: MNHNCL 1546 (same number but smaller specimen) or 1550 (depending on source) (Mus. Nac. Hist. Nat. Santiago); FMNH 9969 (Field Mus. Nat. Hist.). 
Diagnosis 
CommentSynonymy: This species may be synonymous with L. platei. The description by Philippi 1860 is rather vague and the type locality is rather vague too (D. Pincheira-Donoso, pers. comm. 1 Aug 2014). Known from only two specimens (Pincheira-Donoso, pers. comm, 3 Apr 2017). For a discussion of the status of L. melanopleurus see Troncoso-Palacios & Marambio-Alfaro (2021). The status of this species still remains unclear fide Troncoso-Palacios 2026.

Abundance: only known from the type specimen (Meiri et al. 2017). 
EtymologyNamed after Greek melanos (μέλανος), black + Greek pleura (πλευρά), sides or side (of a person or animal). (PHILIPPI 1860, Esteban Lavilla, pers. comm., April 2024)
