DiagnosisDiagnosis: Fácilmente reconocible a nivel genérico por la peculiar morfología de la rostral. Del muy afín Phimophis vittatus se reconoce por la distinta coloración, por la rostral inferiormente más ancha que larga (tan larga como ancha en vittatus), y por varias diferencias morfométricas significativas (Abdala, 1990a, Cei 1993).

Type species: Rhinosimus guerini DUMÉRIL, BIBRON & DUMÉRIL 1854: 991 is the type species of the genus Phimophis COPE 1860. 
EtymologyNamed after Felix Edouard Guerin-Meneville (1799-1874), French entomologist who introduced silkworm breeding to France, among other things.

The genus was presumably named after Greek phimos (φιμός), nose, muzzle; any instrument for keeping the mouth closed + Greek ophis (ὄφις), a serpent, snake.
