| Diagnosis | Diagnosis: Plestiodon toyamai sp. nov. is assigned to the P. latiscutatus species group, but can be distinguished from the relatives by the following combination of morphological characters: (1) MSR 21-24 (mean = 22.9, mode = 22; n =68); (2) male PVS 48-52 (mean = 50.3, mode = 50; n = 23); (3) SC 101-110 (mean = 105.0; n=4) (4) CIOSR 9-12 (mean =10.9, mode =11; n=60); (5) PoSO 3-5 (mean = 3.8, mode = 4; n=68); (6) Nu 1-2 (mean = 1.2, mode = 1; n = 66); (7) TIV 16-22 (mean = 17.5, mode = 17; n = 66); (8) PPN usually absent (absent in 41 and present in 27 cases; n = 68); (9) longitudinal light line five; (10) DLL usually passing on both second and third dorsal scale rows at midbody (second and third rows in 39 and third row in 19 cases; n = 58); (11) LL usually passing on both fifth and sixth dorsal scale rows at midbody (fifth row in one, fifth and sixth rows in 40, sixth row in 18, and sixth and seventh rows in one cases; n = 60); (12) EISPF absent; (13) body coloration of juvenile very vivid.
