Distribution	Papua New Guinea (Bismarck Archipelago) Type locality: New Britain (BMNH 1946.1.14.91); Duke of York Island, East New Britain Province (BMNH 1946.1.14.95, 1946.1.15.10). Restricted to Duke of York Island, East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea by Kaiser et al. 2018 via lectotype designation.

Types	Lectotype: BMNH 1946.1.14.95, an adult male. Collected by the Rev. George Brown (1835-1917) between 1875 and 1881. Paralectotypes: BMNH 1946.1.14.91, adult male. Collected by Franz Hübner (1846-1877) between 1875 and 1877. BMNH 1946.1.15.10, adult male. Same collection information as for the lectotype.

Comment	Behavior: nocturnal
Etymology	From the Greek “heteros” [different] and “oura” [tail], presumably indicating that this was at the time of its description the only species of Stegonotus with unpaired subcaudal scales.
