TypesHolotype: ZSM 266/2023 (field number ZCMV 5795, MIRZC 1194), collected on 8 April 2023 by local assistants collaborating with A. Miralles, N. A. Rahagalala, and S. Rakotomanga.
DiagnosisDiagnosis: Voeltzkowia volontany differs from other members of the genus Voeltzkowia by the combination of: (i) absence of any visible forelimbs vs. presence of reduced forelimbs with four clawed digits in V. yamagishii, with two digits in V. shaihulud (described below), and with no digits (flipper-like aspect) in V. mobydick; (ii) presence of frontonasal (vs. absence, probably fused with the frontal, in V. mobydick); (iii) absence of preocular, probably fused with loreal (vs. presence in V. yamagishii and V. shaihulud); (iv) absence of postsubocular, probably fused with the pretemporal (vs. presence in V. yamagishii); (v) 18 scale rows around midbody (vs. 20 in V. yamagishii, V. shaihulud, and V. mobydick); and (vi) dorsally slightly pigmented (vs. unpigmented in V. mira, V. yamagishii, V. shaihulud, and V. mobydick) (see also Fig. 3F, G). Additionally, V. volontany differs from V. mira by the presence of a shallow depression at the forelimb insertion site, marked by a small protuberance and irregular scales (vs. no visible mark and scales identical to those on the rest of the flanks).
