CommentSynonymy partly after KHALIKOV & ANANJEVA (pers. comm.)

Type species: Coluber caspius GMELIN in LINNAEUS 1789 is the type species of the genus Dolichophis GISTEL 1868.

Subspecies: Coluber caspius eiselti ZINNER 1972 was coined in a thesis and thus considered as “unpublished” by most subsequent authors (Ščerbak & Böhme, 1993).

Hybridization: D. caspius and D. jugularis may have hybridized in the past (Javorčík et al. 2024)

Distribution: some old reports from Hungary actually represent Zamenis longissimus (Babocsay 2013). For a map see Sindaco et al. 2013.
