DiagnosisAdditional details, e.g. a detailed description or comparisons (962 characters), are available for collaborators and contributors. Please contact us for details.
CommentSynonymy: Coluber najadum kalymnensis is a melanistic variety and therefore of questionable validity. Baran 1976 and subsequent authors (e.g. Darevsky & Szczerbak 1993) considered dahlii as a synonym of najadum. However, more recent authors considered dahlii as valid.

Subspecies: P. n. atayevi and P. n. schmidtleri have been elevated to full species status. Baran 1976 considered dahlii as a synonym of najadum but most recent authors accepted dahlii.

Distribution: Older records from Israel, Jordan, and Lebanon may be in fact P. collaris. See also map in SCHÄTTI et al. 2014: 375. Distribution not corrected for removal of atayevi and schmidtleri. For a map see Sindaco et al. 2013.
EtymologyPlatyceps najadum schmidtleri has been named after Josef F. Schmidtler (1942-), German naturalist.
