CommentSubspecies: The validity of the subspecies has been questioned because of morphological variation (Good 1988, Vesely & Köhler 2001). M. m. fulvus is not listed by Campbell 1989 for Guatemala. Solano-Zavaleta & Nieto-Montes de Oca 2017 suggested to synonymize fulvus with moreletii, given that fulvus is nested within moreletii in a molecular phylogeny.

Nomenclature: the gender of Mesaspis appears to be feminine, so fulvus probably should be fulva, and cuchumatanus may have to be changed to cuchumatana.

Type species: Gerrhonotus moreletii BOCOURT 1872 is the type species of the genus Mesaspis COPE 1878: 96.

Synonymy: Mesaspis is paraphyletic with Abronia and thus Gutiérrez-Rodríguez et al. 2020 suggested to synonymize Mesaspis with Abronia. They still used the genus Mesaspis throughout their paper though.

NCBI taxonIDs: 2060309 [rafaeli], 2060308 [salvadorensis], 2060310 [temporalis]
