Type locality: Baygonchok [Baygonchek village], Naryn Oblast, Kyrghyzstan, 1800 m elevation.

DiagnosisDefinition (genus): Altiphylax species range from about 30–48 mm in maximum SVL. They are of moderate build. As in all gekkonids, eyelids do not function. Altiphylax species are tan to gray in color, often with darker cross-bands or other markings. Altiphylax can be distinguished from other geckos by the following combination of characteristics: hyoid without second ceratobranchial cartilages; 14 scleral ossicles; stapedial foramen present; frontal single; parietals paired; nasals paired; cloacal bones present; phalangeal formula 2-3-4-5-3/2-3-4-5-4 (manus/pes); paraphalangeal elements absent; eye with vertical pupil with notched margins; digits free, not expanded, with no fringe of lateral scales; non-expanded subdigital lamellae are smooth; digits weakly bent at joints; claws present; dorsal scalation consists of small granules with or without keeled or unkeeled tubercles; head with distinctly large nasals; preanal pores present; tail moderate, thick, tapering, cylindrical, weakly segmented; females lay two hard-shelled eggs (Kluge 1967, Szczerbak and Gulubev 1996). 
CommentSynonymy: In the original description the authors used 3 different spellings (i.e. typos); A. tokobajevi was used first and therefore has priority.

Type species: Alsophylax tokobajevi JEREMČENKO & SZCZERBAK 1984 is the type species of the (sub-) genus Altiphylax JEREMČENKO & SZCZERBAK 1984.
