DiagnosisDiagnosis of the genus: Australian-New Guinean clade of blindsnakes having retrocloacal sacs and solid eversible awned hemipenes that retract into the tail in a helical pattern.

CommentDiet: mainly termites and their larvae.

Type species: Anilios nigrescens GRAY 1845 is the type species of the genus Austrotyphlops WALLACH 2006. Anilios nigrescens GRAY 1845 is also the type species of the genus Sivadictus Wells & Wellington 1985: 41. 
EtymologyPresumably named after the Latin niger (black) plus the suffix -escens (becoming), in allusion to the dark dorsal coloration. (G. Shea, pers. comm., 9 Feb 2024)
